1 dollar is very generous, but that is also a good 33% tip on a 3 dollar drink. A .50 to .75 cent for a 3 dollar drink is decent. Thank you!
Tipping is governed by what you can afford. If you are rich, feel free to toss in a twenty; if not whatever you’ve got is fine. ALL tips are appreciated.
Woah, you give a dollar every time in addition to the already expensive coffee price?! Nice for the baristas, but not so much for your wallet! If you have a cup of coffee everyday, that’s well over $300 on top of what you pay for the coffee a year!
I don’t think you necessarily have to tip them anything if all you’re getting is a plain cup of coffee… you tip a bartender because they have to concoct and mix your drink for you… but I’m not sure pouring plain coffee into a paper cup is tip-worthy, at least not every single time. Most of the time they don’t even add the milk and sugar for you!
You’re already paying a high price that covers your product, plus some for the employee and some for the store. The only time I’d tip a barista is if:
-my drink is especially complicated
-they didn’t charge me for something extra
-if my order involved multiple steps (such as preparing a latte AND assembling/heating a sandwich, something like that)
-they’re especially helpful/cheerful
-they always serve me and i’ve kind of befriended them
and even then the tip will be like… throwing my change from the purchase in the jar. maybe 75 cents.
maybe it’s because i’m a poor college student, but the way i see it, you’re already paying more than the thing is worth, why throw extra money at them unless there’s an actual reason? it really adds up after a while!
I recommend just whatever change you get – pocket the bills and throw in your change… and if you feel like cleaning out some more from your purse, throw extra coins in…
thats fine, it adds up over time.
I don’t tip them at all. The business model is such that customized coffee is the job and they are paid a full minimum wage, as opposed to full service restaurants where they are paid by “tip credit.” Just because everyone has their hand out does not mean it’s a position that requires you put something in it.
~I think tipping should be a personal choice, not an obligation. tip what you want to~
15% is a healthy tip for anyone on the planet except in Texas
where even coffee barista’s should expect 20%.
