Steve Turley asked:

There are many different models of Gaggia espresso machines, coffee makers, and coffee grinders. The Gaggia company started up in 1948 by Achille Gaggia, who was responsible for great changes in the way espresso is made. In 1938, Gaggia filed a patent for a new kind of machine that utilized virtually no steam; instead, it used a piston and lever mechanism that forced hot water through coffee grounds to create a new and better way to both create and drink espresso. This new machine also added a layer of cream, or “crema,” atop the finished espresso. At first, Gaggia focused on the production of espresso machines for commercial use, but in 1977 the company began creating espresso machines specifically for residential use. Two of Gaggia’s superior espresso machines geared for in-home usage are the Gaggia Coffee Deluxe and the Gaggia Classic Espresso.

The Gaggia Classic Espresso machine has many great features that make it a perfect choice for at-home espresso making. An ample cup warmer (it can fit five espresso cups at one time) is perfect for preheating your cup and keeping your drink warm. Its durable commercial-quality construction makes it a heavy-duty machine you know you can count on, but its stainless steel features are aesthetically pleasing in any residential kitchen. The Gaggia Classic Espresso machine can use both ground coffee and easy serving espresso, or ESE, pods. Illy espresso pods, as well as other brands, would work well in this machine.

The Gaggia Coffee Deluxe also uses both ESE cartridges and coffee grounds to create espresso drinks, and it features a cup warmer as well. This model features all the functionality of the Classic Espresso machine but at a lower cost. If you enjoy being able to regulate the amount of froth in your espresso, you will love the auto-frothing feature on the Coffee Deluxe. It is a silicone tube that creates froth quickly and allows you to control the milk-to-air ratio in your froth. The hot water dispenser allows the Coffee Deluxe to help you prepare tea, soup, and hot chocolate in a flash.

If you are thinking about purchasing a Gaggia espresso machine, both models outlined above are wonderful choices and would be great additions to your at-home espresso-making experience.

Steve Turley asked:

The Capresso Infinity burr grinder is one of the premiere products from the Jura-Capresso company, which was formed by the merger of two coffee equipment manufacturing companies: Swiss company Jura, which started in 1931, and Capresso, founded in 1994 in the United States. Jura-Capresso currently sells espresso machines, Capresso coffee grinders, and coffee makers, including an all-in-one machine known as an “automatic coffee center.” Users can command the coffee center to brew a cup of coffee simply by pressing one button. The machine will also grind coffee beans immediately before brewing so that the grounds are incredibly fresh. If you already have a coffee maker but are interested in utilizing a Capresso grinder, there are several options for you to choose.

Before picking a coffee grinder that is most suitable for your needs, it is vital to understand the importance of owning a grinder and what it can do for you. Because coffee grounds lose a lot of their aroma and flavor when they are in contact with air, it is best to grind coffee beans right before you plan to use the grounds. That way, you can protect your grounds and create an awesome cup of coffee.

If you are thinking about purchasing a coffee grinder from Jura-Capresso, they have models in the three different types of grinders, which are burr, conical burr, and blade. Blade grinders are most common, least expensive, and are probably the types you have been familiar with in the past. Blade grinders grind coffee beans at a fast rate of speed and are best for use with a drip machine or percolator. Though blade grinders are an inexpensive option, on downside is that some of your coffee’s flavor will be lost during the grinding process due to the “heat” that is created when such a high speed is used. Burr grinders work more slowly than blade grinders but operate faster than their sibling, conical burr grinders. Burr grinders can grind coffee very finely. Conical burr grinders are considered the “cream of the crop” in terms of coffee grinders. The burrs crush coffee beans into small pieces that are all exactly the same size. Conical burr grinders are the slowest type of grinder (which will safeguard your coffee’s flavor) and grind the finest grounds, even finer than traditional burr grinders have the capability of doing. Since the grounds are so small, this type of grinder is recommended for use with espresso machines and also if you have oily coffee beans, because the grounds are less likely to clog your machine.

The Capresso Infinity coffee grinder, which is a conical burr grinder, is an excellent choice if you are considering buying a coffee grinder. The grinder’s burrs are assembled by hand in Switzerland, ensuring quality and ease of use. There are 16 total settings: four settings for each of the grinder’s speeds, which are extra fine, fine, regular, and coarse. There is also a setting for pulse grinding. Both stainless steel and black models are available so that you can properly match your kitchen’s aesthetic. Since the Infinity grinder operates at a very slow rate of speed, it is much less noisy than most other coffee grinders.

If you are seeking a traditional blade grinder that has the power and capacity to grind a very large volume of coffee, try the Capresso Cool Grind blade grinder. Its blade is made out of stainless steel, and it can grind 15 cups worth of coffee beans at one time. The Cool Grind also has a pulse setting.

Arman Panji asked:

Getting the best cup of coffee sometimes not as simple as it look. You need the best coffee beans/grounds you can get and also the best coffee maker. Finding the right coffee beans is simple, you just need to taste different types of them until you find the one yo like best. Of course this will differ from one person to another and the same thing about finding the right coffee maker. It all depends on your budget and also your personal lifestyle.

Simplicity

If you enjoy truly rich coffee taste there is no need to buy a super duper fancy coffee machine that will cost you hundreds and even thousands of dollars. A simple Frech press will do just fine most of the time. This coffee machine is simply a glass jar equipped with a plunger. For some coffee enthusiasts this is considered the best coffee maker ever made…

To start brewing your cup of coffee all you got to do is place your preferred coffee grounds into the jar and then put some hot water in it. Boiling hot is better. Press the plunger and let it brew for a whole 4 minutes and voila you just get yourself the tastiest cup of coffee. For those of you who prefer strong coffee this coffee maker is the one for you since it produces a more concentrated coffee flavor. Best thing is the price won’t burn a hole in your pocket so you could use your savings to buy gourmet coffee beans instead.

Not Among The Average …

Another known type of coffee machine is the coffee drip machine. It is so commonly found in coffee pantries, kitchen, mini bar all around the globe people tend to think it’s the best kind. Actually it’s not the best but it does able to brew a good cup of coffee.

Not all drip machine models produce the same quality cup. Some more expensive ones allow you to set the temperature of hot water and how much of them to brew the coffee. However this type won’t be good for a long time if you need to continously serve cups of coffee. That is beause the machine keep carafe heated and thus affect the coffee flavor. No surprise that the last few cups coming from drip machine usually taste bad.

Steve Turley asked:

The Ascaso company, started in Barcelona in 1962, was originally the manufacturer of replacement components for espresso makers. Today, Ascaso has its own line of espresso machines. While sometimes these machines focus a little too heavily on aesthetics and not enough on features, an Ascaso espresso machine can be a great piece of equipment for an espresso-making beginner.

The showiest Ascaso espresso machine is the Ascaso Dream, which is offered in a wide variety of colors; nearly all the colors of the rainbow are represented, and there are even a view polka dotted patterns to choose from. The retro design of the Dream also makes it an eclectic machine. Despite the Dream’s unique design, its price (generally found between $750 and $800) may not be justified by some consumers, due to its lack of high-tech features. The Dream features a cup warmer and removable water tank, but in terms of unique or special features and functions, it is lacking. This is good for beginners, but for espresso-making experts looking for more than just a pretty appliance for their countertop may want to search elsewhere. The Ascaso Dream, like other Ascaso espresso machines, comes in three different varieties: one machine that uses solely coffee grounds, another that accepts exclusively espresso pods, and another that can use both grounds and pods.

The Ascaso Elipse has the same basic features as the Dream, including being offered in three varieties and including a removable water chamber, but it is much less focused on aesthetics. The Elipse can be purchased in either black or gray and its lack of style keeps its price lower than that of the Dream to about $400.

Two other Ascaso espresso makers have very utilitarian designs and are great beginning espresso machines. The Ascaso Basic and the Ascaso Arc look and operate similarly; both require only three buttons to operate: a power button, a steam button, and a button to control the flow of espresso. Both machines have a cup warmer, but the Arc’s cup warmer has a small rail that goes around it. Also, the Arc is also produced in an Arc Fun model, whose product line boasts bright colors similar to the Dream’s. The Arc or the Basic are probably going to be the best Ascaso espresso machines to consider if you are looking for a simple espresso maker and do not need a kitchen appliance that will jazz up your countertop.

Craig Barista asked:

What is an Espresso? We will get both technical and philosophical in this article.

What is an Espresso? Technically speaking:

A single shot of Espresso requires 1/4 ounce (7grams) of finely ground coffee to be tightly packed (tamped) into a filter
holder so that hot water (not-quite-boiling water) between 195F and 205F or 88C and 92C). This water is forced through the
tamped coffee grounds under at least 9bar of pressure (at least 130PSI). It will take 20 to 30 seconds to extract exactly
one fluid ounce (30ml) of the richly aromatic and flavorful espresso coffee.

What is an Espresso? Philosophically speaking:

As we all know Espresso is Italian in origin. Loosely translated, Espresso means a cup of coffee brewed expressly for you.

Francesco Illy calls Espresso “a romantic, remarkably aromatic, and complex liquid. It is at once a solution of sugars,
caffeine, acids, and proteins; a suspension of tiny particles of coffee beans and minute bubbles of gas; an emulsion of
oils and colloids….all concentrated into a small volume and covered with a light, brown-colored foam known as crema”.

What is an Espresso? What does it look like:

Espresso should dribble from your group (handle with basket) in a thick brown-honey colored stream displaying with the
viscousity of warm honey. In the trade it is described as the tail of the mouse for the way it curves from the group an falls
into the wait demitasse cup. This is true Espresso. Not the watery coffee that many of us get served.

What is an Espresso? What does it smell like:

The Espresso should have a rich aromatic smell that fills the room. This is helped by using the freshest beans. The
particular smell will depend on the beans and the roast. But once you have experienced that fresh coffee smell, there is
no mistaking it when someone is brewing a fresh Espresso.

What is an Espresso? It’s a sensory invasion.

One more thing, the word is pronounced Es-press-o. Not X-press-o. Xpresso is more likely to be our poor attempt at asking
an Italian for details about the xpresso train that runs straight into the heart of Rome/Florence/??? without many stops….

What’s Crema I hear you ask? Well, crema is that wonderful creamy almond colored foam that is produced when making a great
Espresso. The crema sits on the surface of the Espresso. It is actually the rich flavorsome oils that where trapped within
the coffee beans. These oils rise to the surface of the Espresso creating a rich foamy texture. But be aware that this
crema will not remain for long. So, if you are serving straight Espresso to people, a quick delivery to your guests, once
the Espresso has brewed is recommended.

So there you have it. Espresso by the numbers and Espresso by the senses.

Jennifer Harris asked:

In 1963, the Braun company had come out with one of the world’s first commercially available dripolator machines, the Braun Coffee Maker. Designed for commercial use, it changed the way people looked at making a cup of coffee.

Before the Braun Coffee Maker, people used a stove top percolator machine to brew their coffee. From home to commercial use, perking coffee was the only way to get a cup of joe. Later versions of percolator machines were electric, and could be plugged directly into a socket.

The difference between percolators and dripolators is what changed the world of coffee as Americans knew it. Instead of having to perk coffee, people were able to fill up a separate water reservoir, put coffee grounds into a filter and put the filter into a basket. From there, one simply had to plug in the machine and turn it on.

The water would then heat up in the water reservoir and drip onto the freshly ground coffee. As it made the journey through the grounds, the water would turn into coffee, much like one would brew a cup of tea. By the time the hot water made its way through the coffee grounds and dripped into the empty pot below, it was a perfect cup of coffee.

The filter kept the grounds from mixing in with the actual coffee, and a new way to complete a daily task was born. While the Braun Coffee Maker was the first one on the market for commercial use, it wasn’t the first one to hit the kitchen counter of the average American citizen.

What the Braun Coffee Maker did for commercial use, Mr. Coffee did for home use. In 1972, Mr. Coffee was on store shelves. Pitched by former baseball player Joe DiMaggio, the machine became wildly popular in the 1970s and 1980s.
